What’s going on family?

In this video I’m comparing various methods of tracking out beats from the Akai MPC 2000XL using Logic Pro X. The focus of this video is to compare the DAW’s ability to capture the groove and synchronization of the MPC using MTC sync and MIDI import. I provide the results of this test at the end of this video for you to judge for yourself.

I’ve tried using MIDI Beat Clock sync in the past as well, however I’ve always gotten shaky results using that method. I have typically preferred to use MTC sync with the MPC in the past however, I find that the MIDI import option is much more accurate and more flexible if I need to replace sounds.

Another thing to note is that in my previous setups, my MIDI interface was built into my firewire audio interfaces (Digi 002, Digi 003, Motu 828) which also can affect the stability of the synchronization since USB introduces more jitter. Check out the video and let me know your thoughts on this topic.

Additional Technical Notes:

MIDI Interface: Yamaha UX96 USB
Synchronization Type: Midi Time Code
MTC Frame Rate: 25
Pre Roll: 2 Bars

Here’s a few of my recommended MIDI Interfaces for Tracking out an MPC using MIDI/MTC sync*:

iConnectivity mio 1-in 1-out USB to MIDI Interface for Mac and PC

MOTU Micro Lite USB MIDI Interface
